Two Timmins funeral homes could be teaming up for a crematorium.

A report at the May 14 council meeting is asking council to declare part of the Timmins Memorial Cemetery property on Pine Street South as surplus to sell to Elmwood Crematorium to build and operate a crematorium.

Last year, Lessard-Stephens received council’s support to establish and run a crematorium on Elm Street South.

“Although the original proposal did not come to fruition a partnership between Lessard-Stephens Funeral Home and Miron Wilson Funeral Home to operate a crematorium known as Elmwood Crematorium has been reached,” reads the staff report.

The piece of property is not serviced. The report suggests it be sold for $19,125, which works out to 85 cents per square foot.

“The crematorium operators will also be responsible for the cost of any survey, legal and transfer costs associated with the sale,” it reads.

Timmins council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
