TIMMINS- New Democrats are the only party with a Northern Ontario platform, which includes the promise to introduce a Gasoline Ombudsman to investigate complaints about gas price fixing and give the Competition Bureau new powers to proactively investigate anti-competitive activity in the gasoline market.

Charlie Angus says the retail price of gas affects every family in Northern Ontario.

"New Democrats are the only party with a Northern Platform, because, we are the only party that stands up, shows, up and fights for the North including bringing in a Gasoline Ombudsman to investigate gas price gouging. The Liberal government's mess on hydro is already squeezing household budgets and choking the North's economy. Now on top of hydro, the outrageous discrepancy between Timmins and other communities is impacting our regional competitiveness, our economy and its squeezing household budgets."

The introduction of a gasoline ombudsman builds on Angus request for the competition bureau to investigate gas prices and price gouging in the North.

"Northerners rely on vehicles to work, sometimes over long distances. The discrepancy in price between the north and south can’t simply be explained away by the cost of delivery. A difference of 10 or 20 cents a litre can seriously erode the bottom line of any northern business whether tourism, transportation, forestry, agriculture or mining.”
