NAPS and OPP Upgrade Charge in Relation to Second Degree Murder Investigation

(HEARST, ON) –The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid an upgraded charge in connection with the death of 23 year old Myles SHAGANASH of Constance Lake First Nation.

(HEARST, ON) –The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid an upgraded charge in connection with the death of 23 year old Myles SHAGANASH of Constance Lake First Nation.

The ongoing police investigation initiated on June 15, 2013, has resulted in the arrest of a previously charged Constance Lake First Nation man. Officers from NAPS and OPP James Bay Detachments Crime Unit have now charged 29 year old Justin SUTHERLAND with the upgraded criminal offence of Manslaughter, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused is in police custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane, Ontario, on Friday, May 2, 2014.

The investigation is continuing under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), with the assistance of NAPS and OPP James Bay Detachments Crime Unit.
