NEWS RELEASE

TIMMINS POLICE SERVICE

*************************
With school back in session this week, the Timmins Police Service is reminding drivers to be extra vigilant, especially around school zones, crosswalks, and stopped school busses.

Drivers must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper alternating red lights flashing and stop-arm extended, regardless of whether they are approaching from the front of or behind the school bus.

If drivers are approaching the school bus from the front, stopping distance should be enough to allow students to cross the street in front of the school bus.

When approaching from the back, the stopping distance required is at least 20 metres away.

This law applies to any road, regardless of the number of lanes or speed limit.

Drivers must remain stopped until the stop-arm is folded away and lights stop flashing.

Drivers who fail to stop for the school bus could face fines up to $2,000 under the Highway Traffic Act, along with six demerit points.

Drivers should also be aware, and be prepared to stop around crosswalks, intersections, and crossing guards.

By taking a few extra minutes to follow these rules and remain alert, drivers are preventing potential tragedies and ensuring a safe school year for all students.
