Local businesses can hear what's on tap for the mining industry directly from the minister responsible for the provincial portfolio.

Monday, Jan. 27, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines Greg Rickford is in town for the State of Mining. The Timmins Chamber of Commerce event is being held at Cedar Meadows Resort.

"Min. Rickford will be joining members of the Chamber to highlight key projects in the area, undoubtedly the Ring of Fire and its status, to provide some insight on what his Government plans to do to move projects forward in a timely manner," said Timmins Chamber president Val Venneri.

"Min. Rickford will also provide an overview of new projects in the region and the initiatives the province is undertaking to cut red tape and truly prove that Ontario is open for business."

Venneri said every business is affected by the province, whether it's through taxation, infrastructure, or major natural resource projects driving the economy.

"Most obviously, mines, juniors, and forestry would highly benefit from hearing an update during this unique event, but so too would the support industries that service them. Some that come to mind are any within the industrial, trade, and manufacturing industries as well as any support organizations that rely on a healthy climate that ensures our larger industries have the tools they need to succeed," he said.

It's not often that a provincial minister with a portfolio directly related to the regional economy is in town.

As such, Venneri said it's critical that people capitalize on the visit.

"While an update from a visiting minister provides invaluable insight into what their government is working toward, Chamber membership – and attending this event, grants our members access to present their pain points to the Minister directly. There are few opportunities such as these that exist north of Parry Sound," he said.

State of the Mining runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $45 plus HST for chamber members, or $60 plus HST for general admission. Lunch is included.
