In the wake of the news that the Porcupine Mall Metro store is closing, the company has released a statement.

The announcement of the closure was made July 4.

"We would like to thank our employees for their service and of course our customers for their patronage throughout the years. While it was a very difficult decision to make, it would be our pleasure to continue to serve the community at the Metro in Timmins," reads the statement from the company today.

In an email, Metro Ontario communications specialist Katie Oestreich said there are 42 employees affected by the closure, "who we welcome and encourage to apply to Metro Timmins.

As for the ownership of the Porcupine Mall, she said "Metro has a wide real estate investment portfolio, with one of the assets being Porcupine Mall."

Metro is the only chain grocery in the east end of town.

Giant Tiger, which is also in the Porcupine Mall, has a grocery section, however. In South Porcupine, the Urban Farm also offers a variety of locally-grown food.

TimminsToday has requested further information on the company's plans for the Porcupine Mall space.
