Meet Olympic gold medalists, free barbecue and more happening in town this week

There are two nights of live music outdoors this week.

Aug. 15 is Indigenous day at the summer concert series at the Schumacher Lions Club park. For the special event, the action is getting started early. At 3 p.m. there is Indigenous drumming and dancing and Chief Chad Boissoneault will give a welcome at 4 p.m. Following that, Treneta Bowden is on at 5 p.m., Julie Cyr and Friends at 6 p.m., Arlette at 7 p.m., and Cory and Kyle at 8 p.m.

In Porcupine, a concert is also taking place at Bannerman Park Thursday, Aug. 16. It will feature Yvan and Brianna at 6 p.m., Julie Cyr and Friends at 7 p.m., and Grooove (Josh Berry) at 8 p.m.

The downtown Urban Park will be set up on Pine Street South between Second and First Aug. 15 – 17. This week’s theme is the 1950s. Wednesdays the Urban Park offers kids’ activities, Thursday is the farmers’ market, and Friday is Tunes at Noon. It runs from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, but keep in mind that the farmers can’t start selling on market day until 11 a.m. when the bell rings.

Science Timmins is putting on Fun With Science programs at the main library branch and in South Porcupine. The Timmins Public Library presentation and hands-on science challenges is today (Monday, Aug. 13) at 2 p.m. It will be at the C.M. Shields Centennial Library Thursday, Aug. 16 at 2:30 p.m.

Meet Team Jacobs, Olympic curling gold medallists, at the Northern Credit Union on Wednesday, Aug. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. It’s part of the business’s newly-launched Digital Days programs. People will also have a chance to win a curling lesson for yourself and up to three friends with Team Jacobs. The office is located at 70 Mountjoy St. N.

MPP Gilles Bisson and MP Charlie Angus are hosting a free community barbecue Friday, Aug. 17 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Gilles Lake soccer field. There will also be an inflatable obstacle course for the kids.
