Mayor Black proclaims Poppy Week, joins veterans in raising flag over Timmins

Poppy money can go a long way to help support veterans, their families and cadets

Mayor Steve Black and a contingent of veterans from the Algonquin Regiment and the Royal Canadian Legion, Wednesday, raised the Poppy Week flag in front of Timmins City Hall as Mayor Black proclaimed Poppy Week.

“On behalf of the city of Timmins I hereby declare the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 10 Poppy Week in the city of Timmins," Mayor Black said.

“A two minute silence will also be observed on November 11, Remembrance day at 11 a.m.," Mayor Black declared prior to the flag raising ceremony which hoisted the flag bearing the poppy emblem to the top of the flag pole outside Timmins' City Hall.

Veterans will be offering poppies for a donation to people in Timmins at various locations.

"When you wear a poppy or display a wreath you honour the war dead and help ex-service men and their families," said William Pigeon, the President of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 88.

"This may include food, shelter or medical attention for them and their families," he added.

"And this may also be used for community medical appliances, transportation and related services for veterans and their dependants," Pigeon said.

Pigeon also said that young cadets may benefit.

"Twenty per cent of the balance remaining in the poppy trust fund could also be used to support cadets in the community."
