MATHESON - A business owner is making efforts to acquire an LCBO depot.

At the Matheson council meeting on Tuesday (Jan. 23), a letter was brought forward from the owners of The A&G Freshmart asking for council to support adding an LCBO depot to their store.

“We ask that mayor and council consider our request and help us move forward. Your assistance and support would be greatly appreciated,” wrote Paul and Shawna Oad in the letter.

There is an LCBO store on Highway 11 in Matheson, which is closed on Sunday and Monday.

The Oads said they are applying for the depot license through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), but that it has reached the maximum number of 450 grocery store licenses in effect at one time as set out in its regulations.

Council agreed to support the endeavours of the business owner, encouraging them to apply with AGCO. However, clerk treasurer Cassandra Child said even with council’s support, they will still have to wait in a queue for “quite some time.”
