NEWS RELEASE

TIMMINS POLICE SERVICE

*************************
On June 8, 2015 at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of a mother bear and two cubs in the area of Ankerite Road in Timmins.

Police located the bears and the animals were contained in a tree.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) technicians attended the scene and were able to live-trap the female bear.

Technicians were unable to trap the two cubs, therefore in order for the family to successfully reunite, the female was relocated in the vicinity.

This incident provides the opportunity to remind urban residents about important steps to help minimize potential wildlife encounters.

As bears wander into residential areas in search of food, it is important to completely remove all attractants.

Bird feeders, pet food, as well as fruit and vegetables that may be growing should be removed promptly.

Barbecues should be cleaned immediately after use, and garbage should not be placed curbside until the morning of pickup.

Following these steps will help to reduce the amount of human-wildlife encounters and ensure that residents continue to have a safe and conflict-free summer season.
