The weather is warming up and there is a full schedule of events being offered up this Family Day weekend.
Here are some of the events happening in the Timmins area this long weekend:
Feb. 16 - 18
Action at the 11th Annual Mushkegowuk Cup gets started Friday and runs through until the finals on Sunday. A weekend pass is $25 for adults, an adult day pass is $10, and a day pass for youth ages six to 17 is $5. It is free for kids five years and under, and seniors 65 years and over. Opening ceremonies are tonight (Feb. 16) at the McIntyre Arena at 6:50 p.m. It will feature an opening prayer, national anthem by Dawn Scott, opening drum song from Fearless Thunder Creek, and welcoming remarks from Grand Chief Jonathan Solomon and Timmins Coun. Andrew Marks, followed by a game between the Wemindji Lil Wolves and Moose Cree Scrappers.
Feb. 17 - 18
Hollinger Park, Timmins
This three-on-three pond hockey tournament is taking over the rinks at Fred Salvador Field for two days of action. The opening ceremonies are Saturday at noon and will feature the Canadian Armed Forces. Games start at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the final matches taking the ice at 9 p.m. Sunday, the playoffs start at 9 a.m. The final game is for the men's competitive division at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome to stop by to check out the action and enjoy the live music. Food and beverages will also be available.
Feb. 17, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Timmins High and Vocational School, 451 Theriault Blvd.
Stop by to get your wheels washed, pick up some treats from the bake sale, or enjoy a barbecue. The event is in support of a student at the the school who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Timmins Fur Council Fishing Derby
Monday, Feb. 19
Porcupine Lake
The seventh annual free tournament is letting young anglers experience the thrill of ice fishing. The morning spots are full, but limited spots are available to cast a line in the afternoon. All rods are provided for event, and there are snacks and prizes for every child. To register, contact Kaileigh Russell at [email protected].
Feb. 17 - 19
All of Ontario
No outdoors card? It's not a problem this weekend. Family Day weekend is the first of two family fishing weekends in Ontario, allowing people to cast a line without a fishing license. You do, however, still have to follow the conservation fishing regulations available here.

This free event is letting families try their hand at curling. All you need is clean running shoes and helmets for the kids to enjoy a day at the club.
Saturday, Feb. 17 - Saturday, Feb. 24
Participating locations
Pick up a passport and take part in the free activities being offered by community partners. For each activity a child does, they receive a stamp in their passport. Submit the document at the end of the week for a chance to win prizes. The initiative is part of the fourth them of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge, Power Off and Play! Register at the YMCA of Timmins, Timmins Public Library, or Misiway Community Health Centre.
Timmins Ecological Beekeeping Association
The organization is offering sleigh rides to help the organization raise money to re-open in the spring. There is no set cost for the rides, but the organizer reminds people that it takes about $20 in gas for the 30-minute ride.
