A pair of local curlers are heading to the Canadian Police Curling Championships.

Team Robert, which includes South Porcupine OPP Sgt. Steve Meunier and Timmins Police Const. Anthony Chilton, won the 2019 Northern Ontario Police Curling Championships last weekend at the Astorville Curling Club. The team is led by Sault Ste. Marie OPP Const. Charlie Robert, and also includes Greater Sudbury Police Service Const. Kyle Chandler.

This is the fifth time Meunier and Chilton are heading to the national championship.

It will be the first trip for the current makeup of this team, though.

Meunier said they joined forces a couple of years ago.

“We lost in the final a couple of times and we were able to be successful this time and win, so it’s pretty exciting. It’s always exciting to play in a Canadian championship and represent your province,” he said.

The competition is being held March 29 to April 7 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Not only is it a chance for the team to see athletes from across the country, Meunier said it’s a chance to compete at a very high level.

“Our goal is to play well and be competitive. Our goal would be to secure a playoff spot, get to either a tie breaker or to get one of the top four playoff spots, and then pretty much anything can happen from there,” he said.

Meunier said each team is responsible to get themselves to the championship, and the team is always looking for new sponsors.
