A new project will see the library pedalling books this summer.

The Timmins Public Library's book bike is expected to hit the streets in June thanks to $17,900 in funding from the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative.

It's essentially a customized tricycle that can carry and display books or other library materials. The library is working with Mushkego Cree urban mixed-blood artist and illustrator Hawlii Pichette of Urban Iskwew for the bike's art design. Pichette currently lives in London, Ont., and was born and raised in Cochrane.

People can expect to see the bike at events such as the Downtown Urban Park, festivals and events. Organizations and community partners can also ask for it to make a special visit.

"We are excited to be the first public library in Northern Ontario to introduce a Library Book Bike," said Carole-Ann Demers, library CEO, in a news release.

The project's goal is to interact with the community and get library resources into the hands of children and underserved populations.

"Engaging our patrons is one of the key priorities of our strategic plan and we continue to work towards fulfilling this goal," Demers said.
