Statistics Canada reports that 3.2 percent of Canadian children have a learning disability – that’s the equivalent of one child in every school bus full of children.
October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, and District School Board Ontario North East will be marking the month with a free community workshop.
The workshop will take place on Monday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at Roland Michener Secondary School in South Porcupine, and will also be available through videoconference at Diamond Jubilee Public School (Kapuskasing), Cochrane Public School (Cochrane), Timiskaming District Secondary School (New Liskeard) and Kirkland Lake District Composite School (Kirkland Lake).
The goal of the workshop is to understand what a learning disability is, what it is not, what it feels like and why students learn differently. The workshop will feature guest speaker Angie DeMarco from the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury.
“We invite and encourage all parents to join us in this workshop,” says Board Chair Doug Shearer. “If we can educate more of our staff and parents about the different challenges faced by students, we would hope to see an improvement in learning.”
