The Klingon Rumpus is taking over the city this weekend. To prepare, Mayor Steve Black declared April 21 and 22 as Klingon Rumpus days in Timmins, and their flag is flying at city hall. Pictured from left are Peter Hutchison, Karen Hutchison, Black and Pierre Ouellette. Maija Hoggett/TimminsToday

The Klingons are ready to invade the city with the heart of gold.

A trio of the humanoid warrior species from Star Trek helped raise the flag at Timmins City Hall today to get ready for this weekend’s Rumpus.

For the event, the local Klingon Assault Group is expecting up to 20 cosplayers from different cities across Ontario.

A rumpus, explained Karen Hutchison, whose Klingon name is Lieut. Commander TlharnoQ, is a “party that’s more than a party”.

“We’re going around, we’re hitting up a number of events, both breweries in town have created a beer that is for the weekend inspired by our group and the Klingon pop warrior who’s coming in to do a concert for us at The Working Class,” she said.

The concert is taking place at 8 p.m.

“Her voice is powerful, it doesn’t matter what language she’s singing in, her voice is amazing,” Hutchison said.

“The Klingon language institute has worked with her to translate a bunch of songs that everyone knows – rock and pop songs — into the Klingon language.”

Entry is $5 and there will also be a charity auction on-site, which will feature signed comic books and poster from Clare McConnell and Kenneth Mitchell, as well as a canvas signed by Michael Dorn. The proceeds from the event are for the Wounded Warriors PTSD support dog program.

Sunday, the Klingons will be at Science Timmins from noon to 1:30 p.m.

“They’re going to be putting up their inflatable planetarium and they’re going to teach a lesson for aliens of all ages, humans welcome of course, about this area of space that the planet that we’re standing on, Earth, is in,” she said.

While the Klingons have done many events in the past, this is their first rumpus.

Living in a diverse place, Hutchison said this is what their group can bring to the community.

“This is the city that we grew up in, this is our city and when we were growing up it was kind of difficult to find a place where we fit in as geeks and nerds, we were the outcasts. Comicon Timmins has created a great space for people like us and we’re creating some more space for people like us, while supporting our community,” she said.

The group is always looking for people who love to dress up as any kind of alien. Keep up-to-date on what they’re doing on Facebook.
