Timmins Police are still searching for an escaped prisoner who fled from special constables yesterday while being transferred from the Timmins court house into a waiting prisoner van.

Kate Cantin Communications Coordinator said an internal police investigation is looking into how the prisoner was able to evade his guards and run off while wearing leg shackles.

Cantin said the investigation is an internal investigation and typically they results are not made public.

A search of the Pine Street North and 6th Avenue area by Timmins Police failed to locate Steven Leduc, 32.

The Ontario Provincial Police’s Canine Unit also assisted in the search.

Leduc is described as being 5’5” tall, 145 lbs, with a thin build, short brown hair and blue eyes.

He has a teardrop tattoo below his left eye.

When he escaped custody he was wearing a blue and white polo shirt, a charcoal sweater, a beige, lightweight jacket and dark pants, as well as ankle and belly chains.

During yesterday’s search police temporarily placed schools in the north end of the city (St. Paul's, Jacques Cartier, O'Gorman Intermediate, and Sacre Coeur) on a hold and secure for a short amount of time.

The hold and secure was eventually lifted after the police search of the area was completed.

Residents who have seen Leduc or have information about Leduc or his whereabouts are asked to call 9-1-1.

Residents are also being asked to check their yards and vehicles and report anything suspicious to the police.
