Traffic complaint leads to impaired driving charge on Highway 11

MATHESON - On June 23, 2019 at 5:50 p.m., the Matheson Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were called to investigate a traffic complaint involving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) on Highway 11 in Bowman Township, approximately 10 kilometers south of Matheson, Ont.

As a result of the investigation the OPP have arrested and charged Steven Chum, 49 years old, of Moose Factory, Ont. with the following:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Operation while impaired- alcohol or drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC.

He was served a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the motor vehicle has been impounded for seven days.

The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 20, 2019 in Timmins, Ont.  

The OPP remains committed to enforcing impaired driving laws and educating road users about the dangers posed by motorists who drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Remember any amount of alcohol or drugs can impair one's ability to drive.
