With more than 100 cats in their care, the Timmins and District Humane Society has lowered its feline adoption fee for a limited time and is reminding people about the importance of spaying and neutering.

With 125 cats and kittens at the shelter and in foster care, executive director Alicia Santamaria said the society’s intake numbers are exploding right now.

“It’s a really pushed kitten season this year so all of our kitties are coming in and ready for adoption now or in the next few weeks,” she said.

In response to the heightened numbers, for September they are offering $50 off the feline adoption fee.

Santamaria said there have been lots of pregnant moms and litters of kittens being brought in.

“It does put a bit of a strain on the shelter when we do have adult mamas with babies that come in because already then we’re required to then have them in our care, they’re not going anywhere for at least those eight weeks. It ends of being staff time and care and food and resources for quite a while until we’re actually able to get them out and into homes,” she said.

For people looking to adopt a cat, don’t overlook the adults.

At the Timmins shelter, which is located in the west end of town on Mahoney Road, Adele will be marking her one-year anniversary Sept. 28.

While her four babies got adopted right away, the calico is still waiting for her forever home.

“It’s kind of sad, little kitties are so cute and precious and they go super, super quick, which is good too, all adoptions do help,” said Santamaria.

With so many pregnant moms and litters of kittens arriving at the shelter, she is also reminding people about the importance of spaying and neutering your pet.

The adoption fee includes spay/neutering, vaccines, de-worming, and six weeks of pet insurance.
