In partnership with TEMPO (Through Education Music Provides Opportunity), a registered music business education charity, Timmins High and Vocational School is excited to announce a new interdisciplinary course commencing February 2016 entitled “The Music Business”.

Under the direction of music teacher Barry Promane, students will gain hands-on experience in songwriting, collaboration, marketing, social media, communication and copyright law.

To enhance their understanding, learners will hear from guests including studio engineers, record label executives, Juno-nominated songwriters, professional touring musicians and entertainment lawyers, who will conduct workshops at TH&VS throughout the semester.

“We will be working with students in Timmins who have the talent and passion for music to develop the entrepreneurial and creative skills required to build sustainable careers and businesses as an artist or music industry professional,” says TEMPO Executive Director, Vel Omazic.

TEMPO was founded by Coalition Music, an award-winning Toronto artist management and record company with clients such as Simple Plan and Our Lady Peace.

The program has been running in partnership with the Toronto District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board and Aboriginal communities on Manitoulin Island and in North Bay since 2011.

The course is made possible through the very generous support of Lake Shore Gold Corporation.

“Lake Shore Gold is very proud to be a part of this innovative learning opportunity providing all students with access and exposure to the multi-faceted music business through this specialized program,” says Tom Laughren, Lake Shore’s Director of Corporate and Social Responsibility.

“We thank Lake Shore Gold for providing this exciting opportunity to our students,” adds Timmins High Principal, Greg Vincze. “The course will conclude May 24th-26th with the students flying to Toronto to record three original compositions at the state-of-the-art Coalition Music facility. Our students are excited to get started!”

The new course is set to start at the school on February 1st. TEMPO representatives will be at the school on February 16 and 17.
