With Timmins council starting a conversation about increasing the mayor’s salary, here’s a look at how much Northern Ontario mayors took home last year.

Each year, municipalities are required to reveal how much council members were paid in salary and expenses.

Here’s how Northern Ontario mayors stacked up in 2016, the last full year that the remuneration numbers are available for. The population numbers are from the 2016 census, which are the most recent totals available from Stats Canada.

• Timmins, population 41,788. Mayor Steve Black received $93,617. That includes $73,078 in remuneration, and $20,538 in expenses.

• North Bay, population 51,553. Mayor Al McDonald was paid a total of $76,404. That includes a $43,437 salary, $21,719 in expense allowance, $7,975 in fringe benefits, and $3,272 in reimbursable expenses.

• Sault Ste. Marie, population 73,368. Mayor Christian Provenzano was paid $81,457. That includes a $70,990 honorarium, $4,648 car allowance, and $5,818 for travel to conferences and meetings.

• Greater Sudbury, population 164,689. Mayor Brian Bigger collected $143,347. That includes $118,391 in remuneration, and $24,956 in fringe benefits.

This is the final year for the current municipal councils. The next municipal election is October 2018.
