While the bed capacity is stable, the number of people testing positive for COVID-19 that need medical care is increasing, according to an update from Timmins and District Hospital (TADH).

As of 10 a.m. this morning, there were 18 patients with COVID-19 at the facility, including one person in ICU. That's an increase since the last report Friday when there were 10 patients, including one person in ICU, admitted.

There are also 42 patients admitted to the hospital who have been tested for COVID-19 and are waiting for results or who will be tested.

As the region continues to see a surge in cases, the hospital is working to create additional testing, including walk-in testing, at the assessment centre. No details are available on the changes yet.

Over the long weekend (May 22-24), 129 new cases were confirmed in the region.

The Porcupine Health Unit has the highest weekly case rate in Ontario.

The weekly case rate (from May 15 to May 21) for the Porcupine Health Unit is 258.9 cases per 100,000 population. Peel Region’s rate is 186 cases per 100,000 population for the same time period. Toronto Public Health’s rate is 114.2 cases per 100,000 people.

In the Porcupine Health Unit region, there have been 1,165 confirmed cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 809 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are a record 330 known active cases in the region.

At Timmins and District Hospital, the average age of admitted patients is 60 years old. Friday, the reported average age was 54 years.

Since the last report Friday, there have been no patients transferred to alternate care facilities out of the district, according to the update.

"We are continuing to see the concerning trend of younger, sicker patients attending hospital requiring medical attention with COVID-19," reads the update.
