Hit and run leads to impaired charge

MOOSONEE – On Jan. 18, 2017 at approximately 4:25 p.m., Moosonee Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a motor vehicle collision that had occurred moments earlier at the intersection of Second street and Arena road in the town of Moosonee.

The suspect vehicle drove through the intersection colliding with another vehicle before driving away from the scene. Police located the suspect vehicle on Bay road and conducted a traffic stop. 

While speaking with the driver, it was determined that he had been consuming alcoholic beverages.

As a result of this investigation Jonathan Knapaysweet (35), of Fort Albany, Ontario has been charged with the following offences:

  • Driving a motor vehicle while ability impaired contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Driving a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Fail to stop at the scene of an accident contrary to section 252 of the Criminal Code of Canada. 
  • Driving while Disqualified contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada. 
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. 

The accused appeared in court on Jan. 20, 2017 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins.

The OPP are reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects that a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
