TIMMINS, ON: Northern College is challenging Timmins residents to burn off their excess Thanksgiving calories in support of local college students.

On Saturday, October 17, 2015, Northern will be hosting its first-ever 2k/5k Walk/Run Your Turkey Off event, which will support the college’s Leaders of Tomorrow Entrance Scholarship Fund.

Walk/Run participants will have the choice of completing either a two or five kilometre course, both of which will follow scenic lakeside trails and residential roads.

Members of the public are welcome to participate.

All participants have the option of raising pledges to cover their entrance fees, or they can pay those fees directly.

Children under 12 can participate at no cost.

100 percent of the proceeds from the Walk/Run will be added to the college’s Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Fund.

“It’s no secret that most of us give in to overindulgence over the Thanksgiving weekend,” says Nicole Gingras, Development Officer at the Northern College Foundation. “Our Walk/Run gives people a fun way of getting back into the groove of working out, while contributing to a worthy cause. The entrance scholarships that our Walk/Run proceeds are going towards truly make a difference in the affordability of education for promising local students – our region’s future leaders.”

Over 50 prizes will be awarded to Walk/Run participants, including participation medals, treat bags and a special prize for the participant who wears the best turkey costume.

One lucky participant will win a grand prize draw for a pair of tickets to any Porter Airlines destination.

Post-race snacks and refreshments will be provided courtesy of students in Northern’s Developmental Services Worker and District School Board Ontario North East’s College Link programs, as well as participants from the Cochrane Temiskaming Resource Centre (CTRC) Client Support Service.

Event sponsors include Porter, Follett, Grand & Toy, Shoppers Drug Mart, the Northern College Alumni Association, the Northern College Student Association, Chartwells, DAVIDsTEA, Metro, RoadID, Johnson Inc., Giant Tiger, GoodLife Fitness, Dailey’s Your Independent Grocer and Alicia Ouellette, Registered Holistic Nutritionist.

The 2k/5k Walk/Run Your Turkey Off event will kick off in the B-Wing of Northern’s Timmins Campus at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Members of the public interested in participating can register online at northernc.on.ca/nc-turkeyrun/
