As part of its commitment to truth and reconciliation, Black River-Matheson is recognizing Sept. 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

A short ceremony will be at the township office for the inaugural event. The municipality is also encouraging people to expand their own knowledge about the history and lasting impacts of residential schools.

“Council has prioritized relationship building with the Wahgoshig First Nation and other Indigenous neighbours,” said Mayor Gilles Laderoute, in a news release. “We will continue to work with Wahgoshig First Nation and all Indigenous leaders to best determine how we can support their efforts and find opportunities to work together.”

During the ceremony on Sept. 30. the Wahgoshig First Nation flag will be raised with the township flag. It will be followed by a traditional feast hosted by Wahgoshig First Nation at the Family Lodge, 376 Second St., Matheson.

To learn more about the 94 calls to action, the township encourages people to visit the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada website.
