Health unit reports 11th COVID-related death this year

34 new cases also reported, hospitalizations increase to 30 in the region

One COVID-related death and 34 new cases are being reported by the Porcupine Health Unit today (Feb. 8). 

The number of hospitalizations in the region has increased to 30 from 23 reported yesterday. There is one person in ICU.

At Timmins and District Hospital, 18 patients are COVID-positive, with four of those admissions being for reasons related to the virus. There are 25 patients who have been tested and are waiting for test results or who will be tested.

The health unit did not report where the person who died was living in the region. So far this year, there have been 11 COVID-related deaths in the region.

The recent local deaths have included one man in his 60s, three men and one woman in their 70s, two men and two women in their 80s and a man 90 years or older, according to provincial data. Six were related to an outbreak. Data on the most recent fatality is not available yet. 

For the new cases, eight are in Timmins, 23 are in the James and Hudson Bay area, two are in Hearst and Hornepayne and the location of one is unknown. 

To date, there have been 4,576 confirmed cases in the region and 42 deaths. There are 363 known active cases — 79 in Timmins, 49 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, 20 in the Kapuskasking area, 57 in Hearst and Hornepayne, and 158 in the James Bay area.

Due to changes in testing, case numbers are underestimated.
