Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is no simple task. Timmins dietitians want to help.

March is Nutrition Month and the goal of this year’s campaign is to encourage Canadians to take a 100 meal journey and make small changes, one meal at a time.

This year, a group of Timmins dietitians will be collaborating to offer a community presentation explaining the campaign, and providing the opportunity to get to know our local dietitians and sample some healthy food options.

The presentation will take place on Wednesday, March 9, at 6 p.m. at the Porcupine Health Unit in Timmins.

Hillary Deyne, RD, with the Timmins Family Health Team, explains that “Each month we eat approximately 100 meals. So, through the month of March, our aim is to give real-life strategies to help people make healthier choices, one meal at a time. We are hoping that the tips and support we provide during Nutrition Month can be used beyond the 100 meal journey and allow people to make sustainable changes to their eating and health.”

Danielle Lawrence, RD, with Misiway, explains, “Through the month of March, our social media platforms (listed below) will present different strategies to inspire Canadians to make small, positive changes to their meals and snacks.”

Caitlin Ellery, RD, with the Porcupine Health Unit, adds, “The weekly themes will progress throughout the month from getting ready for change to actually making changes. Use our hashtag #100MealsNorth to interact with us on social media. Every time someone uses the hashtag, a ballot will be entered in a draw to win 1 of 4 Fitbits® and a grand prize valued at $250.”

Nathalie Guevin, RD, with the VON Diabetes Education Centre adds, “Healthy eating is an important way to prevent chronic illnesses like obesity, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and Type II Diabetes. Three out of five Canadians over the age of 20 live with a chronic disease. Canadians are in need of a lifestyle change and following the 100 meal journey is a great way to introduce a lasting change.”

This year’s Nutrition Month campaign is a collaborative effort including dietitians from the Timmins Family Health Team, Misiway, the VON Diabetes Education Centre, MICs Group of Health Services and the Porcupine Health Unit.

The Porcupine Health Unit is located in Northeastern Ontario, serving the entire Cochrane District and Hornepayne, in Algoma District.

The main office is located in Timmins, Ontario, with branch offices in Cochrane, Hearst, Hornepayne, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Matheson, Moosonee and Smooth Rock Falls.
