The city-run Golden Manor home for the aged appears to have saved a significant amount of money on new refrigeration facilities.

At this Wednesday's special council meeting, Golden Manor Head Administrator Carol Halt will elaborate on the proposal.

There is a recommendation to accept a proposal of $64, 645 +HST from 'N. Lacroix Plumbing and Heating' to supply two new walk-in refrigerators, and one walk-in freezer.

New refrigeration facilities at the home have been talked about in the council chambers several times over the past few years. The existing refrigerator was installed in 1982, according the report. High repair costs, inadequate space, access concerns, and reliability of the units have prompted the need for improvements.

Of note, the amount approved for the upgrades in the city's 2017 budget was $598,000. This amount had much to do with the fact an addition to the existing building was initially believed to be required to house the new fridge and freezer. However, it now appears that they can be installed within the current footprint of the facility, thus saving city coffers up to $533,000.

"The current location of the refrigerator/freezer units was to be modified into a dry goods storage room. Upon further investigation and consideration of other capital priorities, it was determined to proceed with replacement on the existing footprint within the building," reads Halt's report.

The city received three bids for the project, with the highest coming in at $87,495 +HST.

Wednesday's meeting takes place at city hall starting at noon.
