According to Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, by 2025, it is expected that Canada’s skilled labour shortage will reach 1.2 million jobs.

As a major employer of skilled trades, Goldcorp understands and recognizes the need to attract young students in the trades.

In 2015, RMSS reached out to Goldcorp looking to modernize their current equipment to enhance their automotive program and enrich students learning experience.

The Automotive and Construction programs offered at Roland Michener Secondary School provides students with a great introduction to skilled trades and teaches essential skills such as numeracy, decision making, working with others and in the ever changing world of technology – an understanding of computer applications used in the trades.

In order to modernize their current equipment, the donation from Goldcorp enabled RMSS to purchase a Holley System.

This allows for their existing equipment to be converted into a fuel injection system and will enable students to understand, troubleshoot and diagnose on more modernized technology.

This type of exposure will help interested students pursue a career in the automotive/heavy duty equipment technician trade.

Grade 11 students Michael Cooke and Chayse Ouellette are both interested in pursuing a career in the automotive or heavy equipment technician programs.

In addition, the school was also able to purchase a new sander and 2 routers for the Construction/Wood class.

With roughly 100 elementary students and 47 secondary student this semester, the equipment purchased was needed to replace worn out tools.

Throughout the semester students get to work on different culminating activities.

From shelves to end tables and muskoka chairs.

This year students will work on drama class set designs and an ice shack for a donation to charity.
