Original news release from City of Timmins:

Extreme icy conditions cause service disruptions

The City of Timmins would like to advise residents of various service disruptions due to the extreme icy conditions caused by freezing rain.

Please be advised that garbage pickup has been suspended until such time that the trucks can safely travel, and the Deloro Landfill is also temporarily closed to the public.

All available sanding equipment has been deployed, but the vehicles are still struggling to travel on the roadways. While we understand the urgency of having the roads sanded, please understand that these trucks are also having difficulty and must take their time in order to do so safely.

Anyone who must venture out today should do so with EXTREME CAUTION, whether on foot or driving, please do so safely.

Our Health and Safety Department have provided a few tips for walking in icy conditions:

1. Assume that all surfaces are slippery, so you will be aware of your surroundings and more cautious as you walk. This is also important when getting out of a car and stepping down on the ground. When you are caught off-guard by slippery surfaces, you can fall.

2. Keep your eyes and head up. Looking down at the ground throws off your balance and could cause you to bump into someone or something straight ahead of you. If you have glasses and look down, you might trip because your vision is compromised.

3. Walk like a penguin. Your center of gravity widens this way. Point your toes out and shift your weight from side to side like a penguin does; this type of walking feels, and looks, a lot like a shuffle.

4. Place your feet fully on the ground as you walk. It can be tempting to walk on tiptoes across ice. Walk with flat feet and slightly bent knees while on ice.

5. Keep your arms out at your side and slightly extended when on icy sidewalks. Do not put your hands in your pockets or on your hips. Think of someone walking on a tightrope and maintaining balance with your arms.
