VIDEO: France impresses on night one of Stars and Thunder

The benchmark has been set in the battle for pyrotechnical supremacy

The competition is on and Timmins is the battleground.

After a long and mostly sunny day in the 'City with the Heart of Gold', thousands of people looked skyward at 10:30 p.m. to witness the first of seven official entries into the international fireworks competition as part of the Stars and Thunder festival. Team Canada will be putting on a giant spectacle as well, but due to having twice the budget of the other entries, they won't be considered for the title.

On Saturday, 'Feerie Feux D'Artifice' of Saint-Herblain, France represented their nation proudly, bringing St. Jean Baptiste Day to an explosive conclusion.

Large crowds were gathered not just in Hollinger Park, but also along Brunette Road, which was closed completely to vehicular traffic during the display, and Gillies Lake. With the fireworks being launched from Goldcorp's Hollinger pit project's berm, the show could be seen for miles. The pyrotechnic display lasted for approximately 20 minutes.

Team Italy is up next on Sunday night.
