The City of Timmins is opening its doors to assist in the evacuation of Fort Hope First Nation.
On Tuesday, Aug.11, Fort Hope First Nation declared an emergency and announced they would start evacuating their most vulnerable people to safety. Last night, one flight with 39 people on board arrived in Timmins, with three additional flights anticipated today, with a total of up to 150 evacuees in Timmins by day’s end.
“Our community is no stranger to welcoming evacuees and we are fortunate to have a team that is always willing to pull together and help those in need,” said Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Laughren. “Once again, we will be working with our partners at Gervais Emergency Consulting, and working closely with health systems and community partners.”
The evacuation site is the Ramada Inn, where people will be bussed from the airport and registered. Meals are being catered through Siva’s, and K-9 PADS will be providing security. The expectation is that this may be for seven to 10 days.
As it stands, Timmins has not yet been asked to be a host community for Red Lake.
