Sports events and an annual mining expo are receiving nearly $96,000 in municipal accommodation tax (MAT) funding.

The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) announced the latest recipients in a news release today.

The 2022 Timmins Bowling Invitational, Northern Ontario Darts Association (NODA) provincial championship, Timmins Pro Snowcross, Mushkegowuk Cup and Canadian Trade EX are the five groups receiving cash.

The bowling invitational is getting $7,500 for the event being held Feb. 18-20. According to the announcement, it's the largest five-pin bowling tournament in Ontario.

There's $6,450 for the 2022 NODA provincial championships being hosted with the Connaught Community Mixed Darts League. It runs April 14-17 in Timmins.

Snowcross is returning to Timmins March 12-13 and is receiving $25,000 to help put on the event that attracts over 150 racing teams.

While this year's Mushkegowuk Cup is cancelled due to COVID, the 2023 tournament will receive $27,000.

Canadian Trade EX is also getting $30,000 for the Canadian Mining Expo  — known as The Big Event — that's hosted in Timmins.

The cash was collected through a four-per-cent charge on hotels, motels and other short-term accommodations. The city has been collecting the tax since 2019. Half of what's collected is redistributed into the community for tourism activities. The city partnered with the TEDC to to be the not-for-profit entity to reinvest the cash.

The other half of the money goes to city coffers. Last night, an advisory committee was created to further look at how the city's portion of the money will be spent.
