Get ready to celebrate the harvest this weekend.

For more than 50 years the Timmins Fall Fair has set up, with this year’s event taking place Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mountjoy Arena.

“This is a celebration of the end of the year,” said Rock Whissell, Timmins Fall Fair president.

“It’s a tradition to celebrate your harvest, celebrate your summer and to be able share with your friends and your family members the success you’ve had throughout the summer. Through the generations the farming went down, but now that people are growing more of their own gardens it gives them a chance to show what they’ve produced throughout the summer.”

The weekend is packed with family-friendly activities.

Whissell said one of the main attractions this year are the BMX bike shows, which will happen Saturday and Sunday.

A horse pull is also lined up.

“The heavy horses are coming in, there’s over eight teams guaranteed coming. That’s Sunday afternoon at 1:30. The older generation have been following the horse pulls for a long time, but the young generation haven’t seen exactly what horses can do,” he said.

The popular baby contest is returning and will be held Sunday, there’s a petting zoo that will be set up, and said he a magician/juggler will be in the crowd pretty much all day.

Vendors are also a highlight.

Local businesses will be showcasing their wares inside, while the big tent outside is dedicated to the farmers’ market.

“We have over 26 booths on Saturday and 24 on Sunday, I believe, so that tent is designated for locally made, locally grown,” said Whissell.

The party doesn’t stop at night.

Saturday, there is line dancing at 7 p.m., with two bands — the Darlings and Johnson’s Creek — entertaining until 1 a.m.
