At their June 18 board meeting, District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) Trustees received a presentation by Student Success Administrator, Lisa Yee. The presentation featured data and positive stories from the student success pathways, including Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), Specialist High-Skills Major (SHSM), Experiential Learning, Virtual Learning and Career Planning.

In 2018-2019, 100 DSB1 students participated in OYAP, across 23 skilled trades. 288 Grades 11 and 12 students were enrolled in one of the 18 available Specialist High Skills Major programs with the board. The Trustees were pleased to hear that enrolment in these programs continues to increase in DSB1.

“This is very positive news for the Board of Trustees to hear,” said Board Chair Brush. We know that these programs support a positive future story for our students and provide them with meaningful learning opportunities.”

DSB1 is proud to partner with many local industries and employers through student success pathways. Through these partnerships, students learn new skills and take steps towards their future career.

“I got to experience what the work place what like, how to act in the workplace. The hours I am getting through my COOP are going towards my apprenticeship in the future,” said Cameron Wiseman from Timmins High & Vocational School.

DSB1 continues to increase pathway opportunities for students and looks forward to launching new SHSM programs in the 2019-2020 school year.
