February may be one of the coldest months of the year, but the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority and the Wintergreen Fund for Conservation are encouraging everyone to brave the weather and join them for the 7th annual Timmins Winter Hiking Day at the Hersey Lake Conservation Area.

This free fun family event takes place on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018 from 12 to 2 p.m. Transportation will be provided to and from the Hersey Lake Conservation Area, courtesy of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge.

A shuttle will depart from the main Gillies Lake parking lot at 11:30 a.m. Following the event, the shuttle will depart Hersey Lake at 2 p.m.

The event will start at 12 p.m. with a presentation from the Timmins Fur Council. Then at 12:30 p.m., a “winter ecology” guided hike will take you on a journey through the Conservation Area. Participants will learn about how plants and animals have adapted to survive the harsh, cold Northern Ontario winter.

The day will feature children’s activities and hot refreshments served up by Wintergreen volunteers until 2 p.m. A warming tent will also be available, courtesy of Sewn Home for those needing to get out of the cold.

In an effort to reduce waste from disposable cups, residents are asked to bring their own travel mugs.

For more information, please contact the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority at 705-360-2660. The Hersey Lake Conservation Area is located about 5 km from downtown Timmins, north on Highway 655.
