Timmins Police issue public advisory: Phone scams

The Timmins Police Service is issuing a public advisory in regards to phone scams.

Recently, a high number of attempts to defraud people have been undertaken in the Timmins area.

Most typically, the false representation will take the form of someone acting on behalf of the Canadian Revenue Agency and will use persuasive if not aggressive means to have the victim forward either personal banking information or monies to be transferred electronically.

In addition, these phone fraudsters have falsely identified themselves as police officers of the Timmins Police Service, using the actual names of current officers, and supposedly acting of behalf of the CRA to make collections of fictitious debt.

It stands to reason that this would only add a certain level of credibility to these illicit and fraudulent phone solicitations.

The Timmins Police Service wishes to make it absolutely clear that, in virtually all cases of outstanding debt with the CRA, substantial written notice is served on the debtor with ample opportunity to apply for a review or appeal, or seek legal advice or representation.

The Timmins Police Service, and all other police forces for that matter do not act on behalf of the CRA in matters of this type.

If you are contacted by phone or internet by someone claiming to be with the CRA, or someone claiming to be a police officer with the Timmins Police Service acting on behalf of the CRA, you are well advised to simply discontinue the call and verify your standing with the CRA by contacting them directly.
