Domestic disturbance led to emergency alert: OPP

A domestic disturbance in Smooth Rock Falls was the catalyst for a public safety alert last night.

Sept. 1, James Bay OPP responded to a domestic disturbance call on Main Street in Smooth Rock Falls. One suspect has been arrested and charged.

A social media alert advising people of a heavy police presence in that area was issued around 5 p.m. Just after 7 p.m., an emergency alert was sent to mobile phones and interrupted local TV feeds to advise people in the community to shelter in place.

"Due to public safety concerns, a public safety alert was issued and cancelled two hours later," reads a Sept. 2 OPP update on the incident.

A 37-year-old from Smooth Rock Falls has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order. 

The name of the accused is not being released in order to protect the identity of the victim.

The accused was held for bail court and will appear in court at a later date.
