KIRKLAND LAKE - In light of an upswing in the diamond drilling field, Northern College Kirkland Lake Campus is again offering another intake for the Diamond Driller Assistant Common Core program that will train students to work as Diamond Driller Assistants in both surface and underground drilling environments.

Applications for the 10-week modular training program are still being accepted with a scheduled start date of October 11, 2016.

“The theory and practical experience the students receive in this program provides the participants with excellent opportunities in securing full-time employment in the mining and exploration fields,” said Allan French, Campus Manager at Northern College – Kirkland Lake Campus. “The restructuring of the program to include both Surface and Underground Diamond Driller modules has proving to be a great success; 100 percent of the spring graduates have been hired within weeks of finishing the program.”

Northern’s Haileybury School of Mines, together with drilling industry partners, developed this modular training program to cover the basic knowledge and skills required to work competently as an assistant to a Surface or Underground Diamond Drill Operator.

Program topics focus on the latest in health and safety, use of equipment, current technologies, and environmental protection, catering to the growing demand for skilled workers in local, national and international markets.

The program’s reputation has forged new relationships and contracts with other far-north communities and partners including the Hamlet of Arviat and Agnico Eagle Mine operations in Nunavut.

Industry partners for this program include Atlas Copco, Boart Longyear, Major Drilling Group International, CABO Drilling (Ontario), Forage Orbit Garant, Forage Asinii Drilling, Forage Boreal Drilling, Foraco Canada LTD, Norex Drilling, Alamos Gold, Kirkland Lake Gold, Primero Mining Corp., CDDA, DiCorp and Canadian Driller Training.

Since 2007, 246 graduates from Northern College’s Diamond Driller Assistant Common Core Program have started careers in the diamond drilling industry.
