COVID outbreaks declared at Dome mine site, Friends Forever Childcare Centre

There are two confirmed cases at each location, according to the health unit

Two COVID-19 outbreaks have been declared in Timmins.

The Friends Forever Childcare Centre and Newmont Porcupine Dome Mine site at the two locations affected by the outbreaks.

Two people at the childcare centre are confirmed cases that are linked to the facility, according to the health unit. 

There are also two confirmed cases at the Dome mine site.

"The PHU is working closely with both locations to ensure the infection prevention and control measures are in place. The management teams at both locations are taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19," reads the health unit bulletin.

"The PHU will follow up with close contacts (those with high-risk exposures) as soon as possible and request that these individuals remain in isolation until contacted and further direction given. Please be patient."

In the Porcupine Health Unit region, there is also an ongoing outbreak at McEwen's Black Fox Mine in Matheson. An outbreak declared earlier this month at Glencore's Kidd Mine Site has been declared over. 

Today, 12 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Timmins. 

To date, there have been 627 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 468 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are 133 known active cases.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
