A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at a Timmins daycare.

It is at Centre éducatif Rayon de Soleil (Lionel Gauthier), according to the Porcupine Health Unit.

"The PHU is working closely with the centre to ensure ongoing measures are maintained to protect students and staff," reads the notice.

"Affected cohorts and staff have been given individual guidance for monitoring, isolation and testing as appropriate. The health unit will continue to work with the child care centre to provide infection prevention and control assessments and support the implementation of enhanced public health measures as necessary."

The highly contagious Omicron variant is driving the latest wave of the pandemic.

Today, the PHU reported the largest single-day case increase so far, with 146 new cases being reported. Of those, 103 are in Timmins.

Ontario also set a new record for daily cases with 13,807 being reported today.

A disclaimer on the latest update noted increasing COVID case counts driven by Omicron have made testing less available, and it has led to the daily totals being an underestimation of actual infections in Ontario.

This afternoon, Ontario chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore is making a virtual announcement.

He was slated to talk earlier this week about new rules on testing and case management, however, that was postponed allow time to review changes to quarantine guidelines in the United States.

This afternoon's announcement is also expected to address whether or not students will return for in-person learning next week.
