A Timmins councillor wants to open up some streets to ATVs.

At the May 26 council meeting, Coun. John Curley floated the idea of a trial period for allowing ATVs on certain streets. It would be similar to the program over the past couple winters permitting snowmobiles on certain streets in order to access trails or gas stations.

“Not on the highways, but on our city roads that we’ve allowed the snowmobilers to go on and I think it’s time that our ATVs can also do the same because they’re having to trailer their ATV for that block or two blocks to get on some dirt road to go on,” said Curley.

He proposed starting in South Porcupine and eastward for a trial period, then getting a report back from Timmins Police to see if it could be expanded throughout the city.

Curley noted it's something that's being done in nearby communities.

He said he's talked to the police chief John Gauthier about it in the past, and recently emailed him about it. He said Gauthier assuered him staff will look into it.

No decision was made on the item. A report is expected at an upcoming meeting.
