Councillor wants new four-way stop

He said people are driving faster than they should be on Sandy Falls Road

A west-end intersection is on Rock Whissell's radar.

The Ward 1 councillor said he is going to be asking for a four-way stop at the Sandy Falls Road and Government Road intersection.

He gave three reasons for the forthcoming request.

The first is the odd angle the Government Road crosses Sandy Falls.

"The road crosses normally at 90-degrees, this intersection is at about 70, which makes the blind spot the area that the vehicles are coming towards you,” he said.

The hill south of Government on Sandy Falls is also a factor, along with wanting to reduce the speed of vehicles on Sandy Falls Road.

“Sandy Falls is three-kilometres long without any stop signs, any restrictions for speed other than the posted signs that are 50 km/hr,” he explained.

In July 2018, he said the previous ward councillor asked for a speed trailer in the area.

According to Whissell, during a nine-day period there were more than 3,200 vehicles that used Sandy Falls Road, with the average speed being about 58 km/hr. He told council three vehicles were at 98 km/hr, with one at 118 km/hr.

“Sandy Falls right now is in good shape and it’s a long stretch of road and people are driving a little faster than they should be,” he said.

By asking for stop signs, he said it's a way of regulating the speed without asking for a police cruiser on the road.
