Fencing improvements at a number of wastewater treatment pumping stations will cost the City of Timmins more than what was budgeted.

Northern Fencing has been awarded the $119,145 contract for the work.

The project will see fencing either repaired or installed at facilities on Park Avenue, Shirley Street, Park Avenue, Mountjoy Street South, Kenneth Crescent and Nugget Crescent/Shaw Creek Road.

"Security fences are installed and used primarily to define the perimeter of protected areas and to provide a physical and psychological deterrent to entry, preventing unauthorized personnel from entering and to provide a factor of safety to the location," reads the staff report.

Two bids were received for the project and Northern Fencing's was the lowest.

The 2021 capital budget included $50,000 for the work.

To cover the extra $69,145, the emergency backup systems at the Beaurivage pumping station will be deferred.
