An individual and a local company are facing charges following an incident that occurred last week on Highway 101 East.

A commercial vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 101 was involved in a collision after its dual set of rear wheels came off and traveled across the highway, hitting two other vehicles.

Upon further investigation by the TPS’ traffic section, it was determined that the loss of the vehicle’s wheels was a result of the wheel nuts loosening over time. There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

The driver was charged with failing to ensure a daily inspection of a commercial motor vehicle was conducted properly and operating an unsafe motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act. The company was charged with permitting the operation of an unsafe commercial motor vehicle and operating a commercial motor vehicle - causing the wheels to become detached.

Businesses that use commercial vehicles are reminded that there is a requirement under the Highway Traffic Act to perform a daily inspection of any commercial motor vehicle, which includes ensuring wheel nuts are securely in place. Detached wheels from commercial motor vehicles can and have caused serious injuries and death on Ontario highways.
