College, Interfor ink new deal

'We enjoy giving students the opportunity to grow with us in a real-world setting, giving them the chance to apply learnings to practical application,' says mill manager

A Timmins college and forestry company have reached a new deal.

Northern College and Interfor signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) recently, extending an agreement that was originally formed in 2019.

The three-year agreement encourages teaching partnerships, recruitment, employment initiatives, opportunities for speaking engagements, applied research, co-op placements, curriculum support and scholarships, according to a college news release.

“At Northern, we strive to create an educational environment for students that is informed by industry, creating work-ready graduates in each of our programs,” stated Mitch Dumas, Northern College president and CEO, in the news release

“Memorandums of understanding like this one with Interfor help us achieve that, providing fertile ground for mutual growth that will benefit all parties involved, as well as strengthening the regional economy.”

Interfor hopes that offering experience to placement students and new graduates will help fill employment gaps in the industry.

“We enjoy giving students the opportunity to grow with us in a real-world setting, giving them the chance to apply learnings to practical application,” said Lee Jaques, Interfor Timmins mill manager. “This ultimately leads to the prospect of future employment opportunities within Interfor, and the chance for a rewarding career.”
