Collège Boréal will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with a 90-minute film and a virtual pre-cocktail meeting this year.

The college officially launched in September 1995 and there were plans to have celebrations and live events around fall 2020, said Marc Despatie, director of communications, strategic planning and government relations.

Because of the pandemic, the plans have shifted.

The virtual celebration will take place on Thursday, June 17. It will consist of a pre-cocktail Zoom meeting and a 90-minute film streamed live on YouTube.

"We realized there's an appetite for celebration, so we'll celebrate the best we can. In the typical Boréal fashion, we're not going to deliver what will be a traditional Zoom meeting," Despatie said. "This is really a 90-minute film that talks about Boréal. It's going to be a lot of fun for people to watch."

The pre-cocktail will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by the main event at 6 p.m.

The idea of the pre-cocktail is to warm people up and put them in the mood to "think about Boréal and celebrate Boréal,” Despatie said.

“After that, they can make themselves a drink or get a snack, sit back and join us on a 90-minute journey through some stories about Collège Boréal, how it came to be, what makes it unique and how it has evolved over the last 25 years,” he said.

The film will include interviews with every Boréal president over the years, some staff, students and those who have contributed to the development of the college throughout the past two decades, according to Despatie.

In addition, the film will include music videos for the three official songs Collège Boréal has created over the years.

The college worked with a Sudbury company on the production of the film.

Throughout the summer and over the fall, the college will also be releasing 13 short videos telling the story of the college, its services, major innovations and programs. The college is still in the process of filming the videos and about half of them are done, Despatie said.

“We’re enthusiastic about having this moment for Boréal. We hope we’re going to have people all over Ontario and all over the world joining us to celebrate,” Despatie said.

The first 1,000 people to register for either of the events will receive a celebration kit by mail, while people outside of Ontario and the country will get a virtual party kit.
