More than $850,000 has been announced to help long-term care homes in the Timiskaming-Cochrane area during the second wave of COVID-19.

The cash, announced today by Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli, is to help reduce the risk of the virus entering the facilities.

“From the start of the pandemic, we have taken quick and decisive action to make sure that long-term care homes in Northern Ontario have access to the resources they need to care for our loved ones” said Fedeli in a news release. “This funding will assist with stopping the spread of this virus and protect our most vulnerable and the staff who have been working tirelessly to keep them safe.”

The additional funding covers eligible expenses for:

  • An immediate 24/7 checkpoint to confirm staff and caregivers are properly screened for symptoms and potential exposures before entering the building, and for ongoing screening of residents.
  • Hiring new staff to help with the added workload for essential services or to replace workers who are sick or in isolation.
  • Cleaning, equipment, and operating supplies beyond typical levels.
  • Implementing infection control measures based on clinical evidence, physician's advice, or other regulated health practitioners with infection control expertise.
