Cobalt man arrested after six-hour standoff with police

After treatment at hospital for minor injuries accused faces a slew of serious charges including assault, assault with a weapon and mischief over $5,000

TEMISKAMING SHORES, ON - On May 3, 2019, at approximately 12:50 p.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), under the direction of the Critical Incident Commander (CIC) of the OPP and with the assistance of the North East Region OPP Crime Unit, the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), the North East Region OPP Canine Unit (K9), the North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), and the OPP Crisis Negotiator (CN), responded to a barricaded person on Silver Street in the Town of Cobalt, Ontario. 

The accused was wanted on three separate warrants from the Temiskaming OPP Detachment, one being domestic related.  

After approximately six hours the accused was arrested by police. He was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.   

As a result a, 26-year-old male, from Cobalt, Ontario, has been charged with the following offences: 

  • Mischief Over $5000, contrary to section 430(3) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order (12 counts), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC,
  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance (three counts), contrary to section 145(3) of the CC,
  • Assault Causing Bodily Harm (three counts), contrary section 267(b) of the CC,
  • Assault (five counts), contrary to section 266 of the CC,
  • Assault with a Weapon (two counts) contrary to section 267(a) of the CC,
  • Causing a Disturbance, contrary to section 175(1)(a) of the CC, and
  • Mischief Under $5000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC.

The accused has been remanded into custody, pending bail.  

The OPP will not be releasing the name in order to protect the identity of the victim.
