City looking at traffic calming measures in Schumacher

The study started with a request by Coun. Joe Campbell

City staff is taking a look at traffic on Fourth Avenue.

The study into traffic calming measures near Schumacher Public School is at the request of Coun. Joe Campbell.

In June, he brought up the issue, noting there's no stop sign on Fourth Avenue.

“Now there is a daycare centre opening up in Schumacher school with the offloading happening on Fourth Avenue,” said Campbell.

While his request was for a stop sign, staff will be looking into a variety of options.

“We didn’t want to limit our options to just a stop sign because we don’t know what the impact on the traffic is going to actually be with this daycare," clerk Steph Palmateer told council this week.

He explained the answer could be a stop sign and a combination of other measures such as community safety zone, a crosswalk with crossing guards.

“Granted, a stop sign always works because it stops everybody at that intersection, but there may be other measures that are required because of this daycare being added to that facility."

A resolution on the request is expected at the August council meeting.

Because the study is being done in the summer, Coun. Andrew Marks noted that the school is closed right now and that should be factored into the decision.
