With the area getting heavy rain over the last day, the City of Timmins says it's dealing with a high number of calls.

The city has issued a statement for residents on how to deal with water in their basements, as well as an update on pumping stations in the east end.

The Timmins area has been under a rainfall warning since earlier this week. The advisory is still in effect, and Environment Canada says total rainfall amounts of 50 to 100 mm are expected by tonight, with local amounts of up to 150 mm being possible.

An Environment Canada weather summary issued this morning shows 91 mm of rain has been registered at the Timmins Airport. Data from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry notes it has documented 126 mm of rain.

In Porcupine and South Porcupine, when the system’s capacity is exceeded, which is normally when there is a lot of precipitation or during the spring melt, sewage is bypassed into Porcupine Lake.

"Bypasses have occurred and continue to be experienced at lift stations 1, 2, 3 4,5 and 6 due to high flows from the substantial amount of rain, and preliminary reports have been submitted to the province. Final reports will be submitted once the event has settled," reads the City of Timmins news release.

"City staff recognized the severity of the situation, and are asking citizens to please be patient as issues are being dealt with on a priority basis due to the high number of those affected."

The city is asking residents with water in their basements to call their insurance company. For those without insurance, a claim can be submitted through Service Timmins online, by calling 705-264-1331, or emailing [email protected].
